Medical and Psychological Evaluations
Applications for Recruit Firefighter will only be accepted online until July 31st, 2022.
Public Safety Answers provides our online testing for firefighter recruiting. The test measures cognitive ability and behavioral fit for the firefighter role. Applicants will be presented with reasoning and critical thinking questions along with personality-based questions and is typically completed in less than 30 minutes.
If you receive a favorable score on the written exam, you will be invited to take the Candidate Physical Ability Test. More information about the CPAT can be found by clicking the link below.
Up to this point, all steps have been pass/fail. If you have made it this far, this is your opportunity to set yourself apart from all of your competition. The interview has the biggest influence on your ranking. Click below and learn more about the interview process and some tips and tricks to make yourself stand out.
This step has multiple phases. By this point you are well on your way to joining the ranks of the SBFD. During the first phase you will sit for a less formal, but more personal, style of interview. We will specifically look at who you are as a person, your criminal history, and your character. After this phase and assuming you meet the criteria, you will sit for either a Polygraph or a Voice Stress Analysis interview. This phase is to check to see if you are showing any signs of deception during the previous interview. If you pass this portion, and your criminal history does not have any red flags, then you may be extended a conditional offer of employment. The conditional offer is dependent upon passing the subsequent steps in the hiring process.
Factors That May Decrease Employment Consideration
* Involvement in criminal activity.
* Misdemeanor convictions.
* Documented evidence of domestic violence.
* Military rejection or early discharge for reason/concern.
* Marijuana usage in the last year.
* Illegal acts.
* Past job problems or firings
Factors That May Result in Automatic Rejection
* Felony conviction.
* Domestic Violence conviction.
* Other than marijuana, illegal drug usage in the last 5 years.
* Drug selling.
* Dishonorable discharge from the military.
* DUI or OWI conviction in the past 5 years.
Upon receiving the conditional offer of employment, we will send you for a medical and psychological evaluation. This will occur in a single day and involve you traveling to Indianapolis, Indiana. This exam is to ensure that you meet the medical and psychological requirements for the position of Firefighter. After successfully passing this step, you will likely be given an official start date for the fire academy.
